MS04 Microporous and mesoporous materials: adsorption and poromechanics

This symposium addresses the causes of dimensional changes observed during adsorption/desorption and condensation of gases in nano-, meso-, and macroporous materials. Interest in this topic dates back more than 70 years to the work of Bangham, who observed that porous glass and carbon substrates dilate measurably during adsorption and condensation of gases. Recently, this topic has attracted renewed interest, owing to the development of very compliant mesoporous materials called metal-organic frameworks, as well as the recognition of new kinds of dilatational response in mesoporous, as well as nanometric materials. The high level of research activity in this area, both experimental and theoretical, is demonstrated by the success of the Workshop on Adsorption in Compliant Materials held in Paris in 2011.

 

Microporous and mesoporous solids are porous solids for which the diameter of a significant number of pores is below 2nm or between 2nm and 50nm, respectively. Given those small sizes, the poromechanical behavior of such media becomes significantly governed by surface effects and/or by intermolecular interactions between pore fluid and solid skeleton. This symposium focuses on such microporous and mesoporous solids and on their poromechanical behavior. Efforts in theoretical or numerical modeling, experimental characterization, molecular simulation, or examples of applications of such materials are in the scope of this symposium.
